Farn |

 |
Farnese (1960 - 1982) Farnese personified "one hundred forty years of
pure breeding, in dignity, substance and gaits." Dr. Rossow
describes Farnese as “Imposing, big framed, most important of
all sires. Good face, strong neck, good shoulder and back. Minor faults
through the loin, strong, well-muscled hind-quarter. Good legs with big
feet. Excellent, ground covering trot, good canter and rather weak walk.
Pleasant to ride, but not altogether relaxed. Spooky. Good temperament.”
Farnese sired 15 approved
sons and 194 approved daughters. Holsteiner stallion from
Cotopaxi
pedigree
and in our Fasolt daughter Farseaga. |

 |
Fasolt, 16.3 h Holsteiner
stallion by Farnese, sire of Farseaga,
hand picked by Emil Jung, with
the help of Maas Hell, who was at the time the head of the Holsteiner
Verband. They felt that these two classically bred horses were the ideal
type of stallion to impart classic Holsteiner type and abilities when
crossed on the Thoroughbred mare base that existed in this country.
Dr.
Rossow’s book on Holsteiner stallions describes Fasolt as “tall, (an)
important sire of old Holsteiner type. Expressive face set on a rather
short, thick neck. Smooth topline. Rather straight shoulder. Nicely shaped
croup. Correct, solid legs and feet. Good gaits, somewhat lacking in
impulsion. Good temperament”. Anke Magnusson describes Fasolt as
extremely handsome, with a wonderful personality and very impressive
looking. She particularly remarks on his expression and the intelligent look
in his eye and the corresponding kindness and gentleness of his personality.
She describes him as one of the kindest and most intelligent horses she has
ever known. She felt his conformation was excellent. His neck she describes
as impressive and big. He was the older, classic type with big bones and
great substance—although with shorter legs. It was for this reason that
Jung
and the Verband thought he would be so useful as a “reverse improvement
sire” on the finer-boned Thoroughbred mares. He was a very easy
breeder with excellent semen and had no problem settling his mares. .

Flaneur Trakehner
stallion Flaneur was
Reserve Champion of the 1967 Körung at Neumünster, and was approved with the
comments: "Exemplary model with much significance in the whole appearance.
Typey head; good neck; well-positioned, broad, and well-muscled shoulder;
good and uniformily conditioned body. Strong and correct in the foundation
with good, straight movement. The stallion has proven himself to be a
predictable, above-average sire." Performance tested at Westercelle 1968,
Flaneur was highly scored and described as follows: "Quiet, very balanced
temperament, playful but good in character. Constitution tight and firm.
Good rideability, balanced, uncomplicated and comfortable to ride. Better
than average jumping ability; good overall performance ability; good
ground-covering walk, swinging and correct trot, well-balanced loose canter.
A stallion with many possibilities." His impact on the Trakehner breed is
great, having sired 15 graded stallions in Germany (the most important
generally considered to be Arogno) and 106 Stud Book daughters, including
the States Premium Mare Maharani II (dam of Elite Stallion Mackensen and

FURIOSO |

 |
Furioso II
(1968 - 1986), sired 81 approved sons, 96 dams of approved
sons. Furioso II was out of the great mare, Dame de Renville, who produced a
series of wonderful horses when mated with Furioso. The first of these was
Mexico, who sired 20 approved sons, 20 dams of stallions, and famous
international showjumping horses, including Laeken, Jexico de Parc and Heur
de Bratand. His son, Le Mexico, has been a hugely influential sire of
jumping horses in Holland.
Furioso II was approved for the Oldenburg studbook in 1967, winner of
his 100 day test. Later approved for Hannover, Rhineland, Hessen and
Westfalia.. His showjumping stars included: FBI (with Thomas Frühmann),
Heissman (ridden by Eric Van Der Vleuten, then Michael Matz) and For

Voltaire is the sire of 33 approved sons and top jumpers like Finesse and
Altaire.
In dressage, his son, Purioso is the sire of numerous stars including the
Grand Prix horse Cocktail (sire of Jazz); Le Mexico is the sire of Ulft, who
in turn is the sire of Ferro. The Oldenburg stallion Welt As is out of a

Goldfisch II ,
Hanoverian sire of Gotthard is found in the maternal topline of
Raffaello's pedigree |
 |
Gotthard (1949 - 1978)
16.11/2 hands, sired over 34
licensed stallion sons - the most highly rated of which was Goldberg in
Westfalia Gardestern I in Hanover, while the private stallions,
Goldpilz, Goldstern and Godehard were all influential.
Gotthard was also influential as a mare sire and he was responsible for 26
States Premium mares. He was the sire of international showjumpers, Gotin
(shown as Girl II) Goya,
Goldika, Gonzales, Galipolis, Queensway Big Q, Goldfink, Golden Gate,
Graf Sieno and Graf 2. Gotthard’s son, Genever sired Genius, the World Cup
Showjumping Champion of 1992. Another son, Goldpilz is the sire of John
Whitaker’s Gamon. Gotthard has also been influential as a broodmare sire,
another World Cup winner, The Natural (by Diskus) is out of a Gotthard mare,
and Voltaire, the hugely influential Dutch based Hanoverian jumping sire, is
similarly out of a Gotthard dam.
Gotthard’s progeny were wonderful jumpers, but were rather stiff and
untalented for dressage.
Gotthard was by Goldfisch II who was the sire of nine licensed
stallion sons and who is the grandsire of another great, Grande. Goldfisch
II descends from the nineteenth century Thoroughbred sire, Goldschaum.
Goldfisch II had a reputation for producing beautiful horses and good
movers, yet neither of his most famous sons had exceptional conformation -
Graf was a small chestnut, like his son Grande, while Gotthard was not the
most elegant of horses.
The great
breeding expert, Werner Schockemöhle described Gotthard as ‘lucky’ to be
accepted into the stallion ranks at Celle. "At the time he was not really
ready. He looked weak and lacking in his expression - he was not developed
sufficiently in the shoulder and in the formation of his neck. No-one at
this time could guess at the time how lovely and expressive the horse would
be ten years later. The fully matured Gotthard impressed through his perfect
shoulder and his perfect neck, and even his head could be classed as nice -
even though he had a few too strong cheek bones from his Arabian ancestry,
otherwise the head was clear and dry with a wide forehead and a lovely big
eye. His croup could have been a little longer and a little bit more sloped
in the top line. His hind legs were quite good but you have to admit that
his hocks could have been better."
On his dam’s sire, Gotthard descends for the Shagya Arab line of Amurath -
also influential on the dam line of another influential sire of jumpers,
Ramzes.
When he was approved in 1951, Gotthard seemed short framed, insignificant
and stocky and it is not surprising that he was not particularly popular
(indeed he was put over all sorts of mares, including cold bloods and
Norwegians) - from 1956 to 1960 he was not used at all. It was not until his
daughter, Goldika (out of a Mecklenburg mare with no papers) started
her sensational jumping career with Gert Wiltfang that the breeders found
him attractive.

Grannus
only covered a few mares at the
beginning of his career but was extremely popular towards the end of his
life and was bred to as many as 300 mares a year. Grannus produced 11
licensed stallions registered with the Hanoverian breed alone and some 80
approved sons worldwide. He bred 540 daughters who are registered
broodmares, of which 46 received State Premium awardsThe black son of
Graphit was another of those great sires who was not a star of his
performance test ? indeed he scored a miserable 86.46 to come 58th out of a
class of 66 at Adelheidsdorf back in 1976. Luckily for the showjumping
world, his owner Heinrich Klatte had faith in the stallion and his two sons,
Guido and Ulrich Klatte took Grannus out into the competition arena where he
collected a series of wins up to Advanced level. Grannus is the Dam sire of

Heureka, Holsteiner mare (born 1960) out of stamm 8145. Under
Hermann Schridde she was one of the most successful international jumpers in
the period 1969-71, where she had many wins in Hamburg, Aachen, Bruxelles,
Vienna, Berlin and Noerten-Hardenberg. After having won the Grand Prix in
Aachen and getting second place in the Hamburg Derby, she was sold to Leon
Melchior, founder of the Stoeterij Zangersheide, who again could celebrate
with her impressive success (for example winning the Grand Prix in Berlin)
before making her a foundation mare in Zangersheide.
Male offspring: Heureka Z produced Goliath Z (by Graf Gotthard Z)- who sired
Grosso Z, the producer of Goldfever- and the legendary Ahorn Z (by Alme Z),
who for example sired Acord I, II, and III, Aktionaer and over 15 other
approved sons.
Female offspring: Heureka Z left four daughters for breeding, which founded
a whole dynasty of show jumpers
1. The first daughter Argentina Z, by Alme Z (1977) is legendary for her
crosses with Ramiro Z: Rebel I, II and III, Ratina Z, Roxan Z and Renomee Z.
This three sisters left already a new generation of brut-mares, which now
prove their world class very actually: for example Ratina Z's daughter
Calipa Z with her son Chicago Z (new stallion at Stud in Zangersheide) or
Roxan Z's daughter Cayleigh Z with her second place in the World
Championship for young horses, 6 year olds in 2002!
2. The second daughter Ganeffa Z, by Graf Gotthard Z (1978) was first
successful in sport herself before produced horses such as Amarillo Z (Aladin),
Rebound Z (Rebel II Z) and Al Capone Z (Atlantus Z). As full sister of
Goliath Z her daughters deserve special attention in the future breeding.
3. The third daughter Reureka Z, by Ramiro Z(1982) is well known as dam of
the stallions Faust Z, Samson Z, Lauriston Z and her daughter Cleopatra Z
(who's son Carpediem Z just became third in the World Championships for
Young Horses, 6 year olds division).
4. The forth daughter Romanze Z by Ramiro Z (1983) is getting especially
important by the fact, that as only one she left Zangersheide to the Bahle
breeding Farm in Germany, with which she moved to Canada in 1993 . Romanze Z
had proven herself in Zangersheide by reknown female offspring like Cobra Z
(dam of the Zangersheide stallion Roble Z), Cantate Z and Fiesta Z as well
as the stallions Liberty Z and Adeptus Z.

stallion by
The Last Orange (by Orange Peel) Pascal Renauldon, writes "...Ibrahim

Although a solidly built type, Ibrahims shiny bay coat displayed very fine,
almost orange dapples that revealed his noble blood. He had the presence of
a king, a beautifully proportioned head with big eyes, emanating controlled
power. In fact, everything about him was big, from his elegantly carried,
long neck, smoothly merging with long withers into a supple back; Other
qualities were a well-angled shoulder and impressive musculature."

a third place in the German stallion jumping index in his category. Lacapo
was a 16.2 ¼ hand gray, born in 1980, the gray coming from the Capitano mare
Larsa. Lacapo was approved in Holstein in 1982, with bonits of 8776688, the
same year as Caribo and Liostro. Lacapo was a “medium sized stallion with
good expression and beautiful neck carriage. The shoulder could have been
more sloping. Small dip in the back. Short hip. Adequate bone with faults in
the hocks and pasterns behind. Very good mover. Good jumper despite some
difficulties with use of the back. His produce were of medium frame with
beautiful faces and lots of appeal. Very good movers.” Lacapo did
participate in the 100-day test but because of illness no score was
calculated. In Germany Lacapo produced the stallion sons Lucky Luke, Liberal

and sound. Schmidt-Salzmann later helped the staff of the evacuated Stud
Babolna return to their own country. The staff, in gratitude of his support,
gave him the choice of a broodmare. He selected the elegant chestnut mare 68
Fenek V of Anglo-Arab lines, born at the National Stud Kisber. Matched with
Lapis she produced the mare Amsel, who founded one of the more widespread
female families in the Trakehner breed. It was Fenek V's bay colt

Lenz (Land of Kings) , a Holsteiner
stallion, the sire of
Cotopaxi's
dam State Premium Holsteiner
mare Acolonia .
Lenz's dam, Franzoensin is by Aldato who is by the
foundation sire Anblik xx.
Studbook Zangersheide says of the Holsteiner stallion Lenz "Lenz
served breeding only four years and after that was sold to America. Up to
and including 1996, the offspring of this [Holsteiner Verband] studbook
owned stallion earned DM 223,000 which indicates that exporting this sire
may have been a rash decision. Moreover, Lenz won a number of German - S
courses, ridden by the chairman of the Holstein Studbook Breido Graf zu
Ranzau" Imported
to North America where he competed
in Grand Prix showjumping under Margie Engle who won the $50,000 Grand Prix of Newport ('95) and the
$50,000 Budweiser Upperville Classic ('94). Lenz's show name in the USA was
Land of Kings.

Le Grand ,
This stallion had a very good 100 day test receiving a whopping 144
points in jumping. He competed very little in sport winning less
than $1,000 before being sold to the UK. It was there he was housed
in a stall for some time due to quarantine restrictions. When he was
finally able to go outside to run/play he broke his leg and had to
be destroyed. He was only 5 or 6 at that time and it was a
devastating loss.
